Half of the fun of traveling is discovering the places you think no one else knows about and then coming back with fascinating stories of your adventures. Usually, the places you think no one else knows about might consist of a secluded path along the edge of a lake, an off-the-beaten-track huckleberry pie café or a hidden mountain stream. Usually when we think of things that are hidden, we think of things that are small. But sometimes we need to think big. Very big. In fact, very, very big.

Hawaii In The Grand Manner

February 14, 2017
By Kevin R. Tam, President

While Hawaii is every bit as magical and enchanting as it was when Captain James Cook first came ashore, frankly, in recent years the experience of getting to and around Hawaii has become less enjoyable. Packed flights without any meal service, delays, airport hassles and, perhaps worst of all, a grim red-eye flight back to the mainland, not to mention packing and unpacking in order to visit three or four islands all make this not entirely pleasant.

What To Do In Chicago - In Pictures

October 20, 2016
By Kevin R. Tam, President

Even though Uncommon Journeys is headquartered in the San Francisco Bay area (Alameda, to be exact), we’re awfully partial to Chicago. You see, we have a tremendous number of trips that either begin in Chicago, end in Chicago…or both! The Windy City is the railroad capital of America, and provides the perfect connection for so many of our train tours, especially on our private Vista-Dome Streamliner, the Great Western Limited. We always encourage our guests to spend an extra night or two before or after their journeys in Chicago to experience this uniquely Midwestern city, birthplace of the skyscraper and home of the beloved Cubs baseball team. From deep dish pizza to perfect prime rib, the city is a culinary delight and its many, many museums are among the finest in the world. The architecture is bold and the people courteous and Chicago always seems eager to say hello. In today’s blog, we thought we’d show you just a few of the things you can do in Chicago. Which is your favorite?

Music City Photo Tour

October 12, 2016
By Kevin R. Tam, President

America’s rivers are about to change as we near first voyage of our newest partner’s first riverboat, French America Line’s elegant Louisiane, grows near. One of its most unusual inaugural season voyages is a 5-day roundtrip voyage from Nashville and that’s why, in today’s blog, I wanted to give you a photo tour of the rising new city of the South, a bastion for live music. You will embark from Nashville on a journey into the beauty of Tennessee but first you might want to enjoy a show at the Grand Ole Opry or pop into the Country Music Hall of Fame during a complimentary one-night pre-cruise hotel stay at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. There are other ports as well. Of course. For example, in Clarksville, explore Dunbar Cave or learn about the War Between the States at Fort Defiance. The Civil War also takes center stage in Dover at the Fort Donelson National Cemetery, resting place of soldiers killed in an epic battle. Or discover the natural side of Dover with a bird-watching expedition to Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge. Give us a call at 1-800-323-5893 for details, pricing and to reserve your suite or stateroom on this once-time-only voyage. In the meantime, let’s start things off with Nashville’s most interesting sights and some truly lovely pictures.
